The stops we'd build a Tokyo trip around
One honest pick per place, and why. Open any for the full verdict. The planner arranges these into your days for you.
- Senso-ji Temple Worth it
Go on almost any first trip to Tokyo, and it costs nothing.
- Shibuya Crossing Worth it
Free, fast, and unmistakably Tokyo; the crossing itself takes minutes.
- Tokyo Skytree Worth it with caveats
Worth it if a vast high-up view of Tokyo is what you want and the sky is clear.
- Meiji Shrine Worth it
Worth it, and getting into the shrine is free.
- Tsukiji Outer Market Worth it
A real treat if you like to eat, and walking it is free.
- teamLab Planets Worth it
A genuinely physical art experience that earns its hype, as long as you accept the crowds and the wet feet.
- Ueno Park Worth it
A one-stop park for museums, a zoo, and a pond, and a top cherry blossom spot in spring.
- Golden Gai Worth it
A one-of-a-kind warren of tiny themed bars that rewards you for knowing the etiquette.
Good to know before you plan
Where we would spend carefully, or not at all.
- Tokyo Skytree Worth it with caveats Worth it if a vast high-up view of Tokyo is what you want and the sky is clear. It is the tallest tower in Japan and it delivers, but it is paid and often busy, so book a timed slot and pick a clear day. On haze or cloud, save your money.
- Shibuya Sky Worth it with caveats A genuinely great open-air view of Tokyo and a top-down look at the famous crossing, as long as you land a clear evening and a good time slot. Bad weather or a flat midday booking turns it into a fine but ordinary observation deck.
- Ghibli Museum Worth it with caveats If you have actually watched the films, this museum gives you something most tourist stops do not: a real feel for how and why the work got made. The ticket is cheap, the building is genuinely odd in the best way, and the short film by itself earns the trip.
- Tokyo Imperial Palace Worth it with caveats Come for a free, calm look at what is left of Edo Castle, the gardens, the moats, and the outside of the palace. Skip it as a marquee Tokyo sight if you are expecting interiors, spectacle, or a castle tower to climb.
